Ópera
Tuesday night I went to the Teatro Real in Madrid to see an incredible production of the opera The Turn of the Screw by Benjamin Britten. The seats were not the best since they were discounted remaining tickets. The sight lines were awful, but it was worth it. I paid bargain prices for a seat above the Royal Box.
Curiously the opera was sung in English with projected super-titles. After a while, I stopped looking at the screen since the translations had problems. So I focused on the singing and staging. And it was spectacular. I am not a fan of Britten´s operatic work, but this piece was convincing. And its story was well developed. Very melodic at times and extremely haunting. I especially liked the two young singers who has to perform the role of the children possessed by evil spirits. Impressive.
Teatro Real sits on the Plaza de Oriente, facing Palacio Real. Inaugurated in 1850, the building has been remodeled in the last decade, but its 19th-century shell still remains an emblematic reminder of the city commitment to the arts.
It also is near my favorite coffee shop La Buena Vida on the Calle Vergara.
